A Plan to Restore and Strengthen Torrance’s Public Spaces

Our Torrance parks are more than just green spaces. They are where families gather, children play, neighbors connect, and our community comes to life. As mayor, I believe we must take pride in our parks and ensure they reflect the care and commitment we have for our city.

This starts with a clear, thoughtful approach: focus on the basics, deliver on our promises, and build forward in a way that serves every neighborhood in Torrance.

A Three-Step Plan to Strengthen Our Torrance Parks

1. Start with Safety

Nothing matters more than ensuring our parks are safe for everyone who uses them.

That means addressing immediate concerns and eliminating hazards:

  • Repairing or replacing broken playground equipment

  • Fixing restroom issues, including doors, locks, and cleanliness

  • Improving lighting and visibility throughout park spaces

  • Addressing any conditions that create unsafe environments

When families visit a park, they should feel confident, comfortable, and secure.

2. Improve Maintenance and Accountability

We are fortunate to have dedicated city staff who care deeply about our Torrance parks. My role as mayor is to ensure they have the support, structure, and resources needed to

succeed:

  • Implementing more consistent cleaning and maintenance schedules

  • Reducing response times for repairs

  • Creating clear accountability for park upkeep

  • Improving coordination across city departments

By aligning our teams and prioritizing resources, we can deliver the level of care our

community expects.

3. Invest in Thoughtful Upgrades

Once we’ve addressed the fundamentals, we can begin to enhance and modernize our

parks in ways that reflect the needs of today’s residents.

  • Upgrading aging playgrounds and facilities

  • Adding amenities based on community input—such as pickleball courts where

    appropriate

  • Ensuring improvements are distributed equitably across all neighborhoods

Every resident deserves access to high-quality, welcoming public spaces, no matter

where they live in Torrance.

A Responsible Approach to Funding

We don’t need to start from scratch. We need to follow through.

Torrance voters have already demonstrated their commitment to our city through prior

funding measures. As mayor, I will ensure that those funds are used as intended: to

improve and maintain our parks.

In addition, we will:

  • Continue pursuing state and federal grants

  • Explore partnerships that bring added resources into our community

  • Carefully evaluate additional funding options only if necessary

My priority is to be a responsible steward of the resources we already have, while

remaining open to opportunities that strengthen our ability to deliver results.

Quote from Sharon Kalani that every resident deserves access to high-quality, public spaces.

Moving Forward Together

This is about more than fixing Torrance parks. It’s about restoring pride in our community spaces. With a clear plan, strong leadership, and a commitment to accountability, we can create parks that are safe, clean, modern, and welcoming for every resident.

Torrance deserves nothing less. As mayor, I am committed to making that vision a

reality.
